The business has grown from a small warehouse on Main Street in Pineville, La to a 60,000 sq ft warehouse on the side of I-49. Long’s is a wholesale establishment specializing in janitorial, paper and chemical supplies. Presently, we have over 1,600 accounts which consist of hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and other commercial accounts. We also sell to the public which has helped our Pelican Brand Chemicals become household names. We now blend over 90% of the chemicals that we sell. We cover 2/3 of the state of Louisiana with our own delivery trucks.
Mrs. Eva Long, (wife of Julian W. Long) has been with the company over 30 years and has worked extremely hard to sell our Louisiana made products to government entities. She has established a State Contract for our Pelican Brand Chemicals, and currently maintains one of the largest janitorial chemical state contracts in the state of Louisiana.
Ryan Donaghey (son in law) and Jillian Donaghey (daughter of Julian W. and Eva Long) are determined to carry the company into a third and fourth generation of ownership. Ryan and Jillian met at Louisiana Tech University in 2000. While attending La Tech, Ryan worked in the warehouse during summer breaks to begin learning products, inventory control, shipping, and receiving. After graduation they both began working in outside sales and in management.
We are a family owned and operated company that strives not only to sell chemicals, paper, and janitorial supplies, but we want to educate customers on the proper way to utilize the products for maximum benefit. Our outside sales team and management will meet with purchasing agents, custodians, and office staff to provide demos and education on industry specific needs. Let us work together to establish a “Long” working relationship for many years to come.
Over 60 Years of Cleaning Products
In 1950, Julian E. Long started Long’s Preferred Products, Inc. in his backyard. As a young man, he served his country by enlisting in the Army and fighting in World War II. When he returned home, he started selling Fuller Brushes door to door. He began to realize that other products, such as cleaning chemicals, could be added to the product line, and his sales began to grow. As time went on, he began to sell larger quantities to businesses and his direction turned to commercial accounts. His wife, Alma K. Long, helped him with customer orders and billing. He had several vendors that helped with simple formulations for cleaning products. There was no overnight success, but hard work, self-discipline and determination paid off.
Julian W. Long (Dooksie) started working on janitorial jobs for is father when he was only fourteen years old. He worked his way up through all areas of the company, including warehouse, loading dock, and operating delivery trucks. In the early 1970’s, he attended LSU-Alexandria, and went on to LSU in Baton Rouge. After a couple of years, his father and founder of Long’s Preferred Products, Inc. became ill. He returned home to run the company. His responsibilities, both to his family and the company that his father had created, quickly required his attention to sales and management of the janitorial supply company.
